The work that I propose comes from the study of the art and culture of West Africa as an individual or group practice, and focuses on the role that dance and rhythm have in the awakening and channelling of self-awareness and social understanding.

In this sense, moving both singly and collectivly becomes a means to construct, deconstruct and reconstruct our identities. The physical correctness of these ancient dances is confirmed by more recent studies in biomechanics, evidence of a deep knowledge of the body and a profound respect for humanity. I believe that the principles from which these traditions originate are still relevant and useful for the stimulation of a critical review of social dynamics and artistic practice. In the first study phase, my objective is to provide a structural basis and build a common store of technical references through the study of biomechanics, musicality and the appropriation of different gestures and dance sequences. In later phases the focus will shift towards creative expression through guided improvisation, character study and short composition.
